Movie Review:
They Way We Were
Starring: Barbara Streisand, Robert Redford, Bradford Dillman, Viveca Lindfors, Herb Edelman, Murray Hamilton, Patrick O'Neal, and Lois Chiles
Director: Sydney Pollack
Writer: Arthur Laurents
This is a movie worth seeing. The comedy is a bit over-the-top at times but, is necessary. Do not be fooled. This is not the run of the mill romantic comedy. In fact, I wouldn't call it an comedy at all. It's all heart. And like the heart, it is filled with laughter. Although, quite truthfully, it is the comedy that has you falling in love with the characters.
Streisand is definitely the star of the movie with the best lines and comebacks. What makes the movie is not Streisand but, Redford. (I am not even the blonde and blue eye type!).
Redford is able to convey so much emotion, thought, and understanding without having to say much. I have new found respect for the actor. To be honest, my only impression of him has been based upon a poor example - Indecent Proposal. It is through Redford's character, Hubbell Gardiner, that the conflict arises. Thus, through Redford's outstanding performance, he makes a mediocre movie a timeless classic.
